Jannis Panagiotidis was a fellow at the Kolleg from July until December 2013. Before that, he was a DAAD returning scholar at the global history department of the Friedrich Meinecke Institute at Free University Berlin. He obtained his PhD in 2012 at the European University Institute in Florence with a comparative study of co-ethnic immigration to West Germany and Israel in the postwar decades. From 2001 until 2007 he studied Eastern European History and International Relations in Tübingen and at the National and Kapodistrian University Athens. During the academic year 2010-2011 he was a Manfred Lahnstein Fellow at the Bucerius Bucerius Institute for Research of Contemporary German History and Society at the University of Haifa.

Research project at the Kolleg

In this study, tentatively entitled “The Big Bang Theory,” I propose to trace the genesis of the idea that the transformation of Eastern European countries from socialism to capitalism could best be achieved by the rapid implementation of a series of neoliberal economic measures, a method that has become known as the “big bang” or “shock therapy.” Starting from the 1970s, I will look for the origins, development, and diffusion of this idea within international organizations (such as the IMF), among economists in East and West, and within and between national administrations inside and outside of Europe. This approach will advance our understanding of the processes of vertical and horizontal transfer of economic ideas. It will also contribute to the historicization of post-1989 Eastern European transformation in a European and global context, as well as to the history of globalization more generally.
